St. Jacobi is open again – General renovation continues

As of April 13, the main church of St. Jacobi is once again open to the public for worship services, events, and daily visits.

Just in time for Easter, the St. Jacobi congregation can return to their church! The community rooms and offices in the north annex are also fully accessible again.

Since the beginning of December, extensive construction work has been carried out on the tower. This area, where much of the original medieval masonry is still preserved, has repeatedly shown signs of damage since the time it was built. Over the centuries, major restoration work has therefore been carried out several times.

As part of the ongoing general renovation, it became clear that certain areas of the masonry needed to be stabilized promptly to prevent further damage. At the same time, additional findings were gathered through measurements and core drilling. These are now being incorporated into the development of a renovation plan that is to be implemented over the coming years. It is already apparent that this will require significant interventions in the building structure.

Because large amounts of wood were used in the tower area and passageways are partially very narrow, there will be some restrictions in the coming years. For fire safety reasons, the tower will not be accessible to visitors until further notice, and the entrance to the church via the west portal and the Schröder Hall must remain closed. To avoid affecting ongoing measurements and to keep the load on the tower masonry as low as possible, the bells will also remain silent for now.

We will keep you regularly informed about the progress of the general renovation on our website.
